  2. Bastet11 says:

    Woah, that is trippy!

  3. Mary says:

    Now that is hilarious. LOL.

  4. I'm nobody, who are you? says:

Holy crap, now that is a win in both scary lookalikedness and obscurity.

    I’m impressed!

  5. Wow. I don’t know what else to say. Just wow.

  6. Scot Z says:

I believe Hester is technically an adulTRESS.

    • vr0n says:

Why the redundant, sexist -ess??? A female doctor is not a doctress, likewise there aren’t teachresses or lawyeresses. So why the need to point out gender here, Hmm? You adult, you adult – no need for gender specifics.

      • Pokey says:

Hey lassie, don’t get your panties in a bunch. Pffft! Iknow how to make you loosen up babe!

      • birdgirl says:

        vr0n, i couldn’t agree more.

      • BAW says:

Actually, the term “doctress” was used in the 19th C. when women first were admitted to practice medicine (and get univeristy degrees.) As late as the 1980s, a Canadian woman specifically asked that her diploma say “Mistress of Arts”, rather than “Master.” (Her subject was Semantics, and she was quoted as saying that what words meant was her special subject, and she felt that she wasn’t a “master” of anything.)

      • Catnip says:

While you’re correct in that there aren’t feminine designations for “Dr.”, “teacher,” or “lawyer,” the English language does specify a name for a female who commits adultery, and that IS “adultress”.

  7. Barnabus says:

I think Hester Prynne looks more like Winona Ryder!

  8. S_O says:

There is one slight differecne: She’s more of a man that Elijah will ever be.

  9. punkin says:

technically, she’d have to be married to be an adultress. only MARRIED people can commit adultery, not people who have sex with married people… why is that so difficult to understand….

  10. devilwoman says:

    lol this one is great!

  11. Bump says:

Haha, wow! The only difference is that Elijah looks cute.

  12. Annegret says:

It would be more correct to say he looks like Hester Prynne from the painting “The Scarlet Letter” by Hugues Merle. The artist is clearly named on the back cover of that particular edition of the book.

    • Jane St.Clair says:

It would also be correct to say that we all got the point without the excessive nitpicking.

    • Granarma says:

Thank you Annegret! I completely agree and appreciate you pointing this out. It’s damn hard for an actual person to really look like a character in a book written in our time, let alone one written approximately 150 years ago… Only the author *really* knows what they look like anyhow. But it is pretty awesome that Elijah Wood looks like that painting, especially since they’re different sexes….

  13. Lindsay says:

Actually Hester Prynne WAS married- but her husband was abroad and the baby wasn’t his. And “adultery” is defined as the act of a married man or woman sleeping with another person. “Adulterer” is defined as one who commits adultery- so it’s really up to your conscience whether both parties are guilty of adultery or just the one who broke the contract of marriage.

  14. Filthy says:

    Dude looks like a Lady.

  15. Loki says:

  16. fawkes says:

  17. DJ says:

    woah! he DOES! that’s creepy.

  18. Kels says:

Damn Hester Prynne is an unfortunate looking puritan.

  19. Blaanam says:

    Holy crap! It’s a consieracy! :O

  20. Blaanam says:

    ConsPiracy… pardon me, I’m from Sweden. ^^

  21. patricia says:

  22. Destiny says:

  23. Chellips says:

I just read that book so I got an especially big laugh from that! XD The resemblance is ridiculous!

  24. MYTN says:

I suppose Elijah Woods rejected the role of Hester Pryyne for the remake, so they had to cast Demi Moore.

  25. jullee says:

    Is he the illegitimate child!?!

  26. Mandi says:

Doesn’t matter.. He is still Sexy!!!

  27. ai82517 says:

Wood is a descendant of Pryne

  28. Emily says:

    It’s his MOM.

  29. Chelsea says:

    no no oyu don’t..
if you actually read the book you’d know that Hester was married to Roger Chillingworth, who was the physician.

  37. rob says:

I also think that johnny depp dressed as the mad hatter in the new alice in wonderland and elijah look alot alike.

  38. Casual Observer says:

This is incredible. Their specific features are nearly identical. Especially considering she was a fictictious character drawn 160 years ago! Look at the brow line and pinching of the skin above. They have identical lip shape & nose design, face shape, expression, coloring, and depth of emotional angst. Quite amazing indeed! I wonder if her picture was based on a real person the author knew. Does anyone know?
