  1. Jupiter says:

Funny, I thought the same thing when I saw that pic on Astronomy Picture of the Day website the other day! Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought it.

  2. FaileV says:

there’s a newly discovered planet? anyone got a link?

  3. Sesoron says:

That’s not precisely the newly discovered planet, that’s the cloud of debris around Fomalhaut that *contains* the newly discovered planet.

  4. BBB says:

    NEEEEEEEEEERRRD!

  5. ohno says:

and to think, i used to beat guys up that knew this…
    you little weasel.

  6. Jen83 says:

OMG- I TOTALLY said the same thing when I was at work and this came on the television…my co-workers all thought I was the biggest nerd. I’m glad I’m not the only one!

  7. hergieburbur says:

Wow, that’s like two good TLL’s this month. Whats happening to this site?

  8. sassyviolet says:

    I KNEW it looked familiar!!!!!

  9. Andy says:

Uhhh .. the image on the left isn’t a planet. The planet is actually a tiny spot on that image, which is not even visible on this scaled version. So the image title “Newly discovered planet” is very, very misleading.

  10. topher says:

Way to rip off Geekologie.com, guy.

  11. Bud Tugly says:

Actually looks a lot like “Ur”anus

  12. becca says:

I wrote this when I saw this pic on io9.com lol!

  13. Guarsnik says:

holy crap, We’ve Found the Eye Of Terror!!!

it’s only a matter of time until Daemons and chaos find us!

    Everyone, RUN!!!!

  14. palsyboy says:

I already made a better version of this with an *accurate* title.

    • basgil says:

Ummmm….. no sorry. The one above is much better if only for the fact that it’s rotated so it mimics the shape, yours is at a weird angle so it no longer looks like the eye at all.

      • palsyboy says:

The problem is that if it’s rotated, it gets those black cut-off lines, just like this front-page image has. And “it no longer looks like the eye at all?” If your spatial abilities suck so badly that you can’t mentally rotate a two-dimensional object forty-five degrees, that’s your problem.

        • Hell Hath No Fury says:

I think it’s mostly because he’s suffering form an EPIC BURN

          • palsyboy says:

The only “burn” is the same one others mentioned: You can’t even *see* the planet in the image, so the caption is a fail. It’s not as though I’m the only one who made this comparison; in fact, someone on Ars Technica gave me the idea, and I told him I’d make a look-alike out of it. Afterwards, I found out that I was about the thousandth person to make a comparative image of the two. If someone with a properly captioned picture would have made it, I would have been happy, not burned. It’s not as though I think I’m the center of astronomical parodies everywhere.

But if you want to think a dust disc is a planet, enjoy yourself. I’ll be sure to submit a picture of a crowd that’s so far away as to make its individuals indistinguishable, but since I knew Britney Spears was somewhere in the crowd, I’ll label it as Britney. Then you can give it your vote of approval, too.

          • LB says:

Get over yourself. This is a bit of fun, not the bloody institute of atronomy and astrology.

  15. Hell Hath No Fury says:

    OMGWTFKFCBBQ!!!!1! Big brother IS watching!
    *hides under covers*

  16. Sarah says:

i thought that too when i saw the news picture lol

  17. WilliamCA says:

Am i the only one who finds that we have a dust cloud out there that looks like Sauron’s Eye kinda scary.

  18. Maudlin Hart says:

    Hurrah for Sauron!

  19. GTKK says:

I totally posted this first same thing the day they released this picture :P

Your lookalike pic is better than mine though.

  20. Jimmy says:

LOL… you think we found it at last? :D

  21. DJ says:

    that’s not a planet! that’s a supernova remnant!

    • Steven says:

That is a dust ring that is surrounded by the star Fomalhaut in the constellation of Pisces Austrinus. It was discovered recently and there might be planets taht exist in that area or planet formation.

  22. Moro425 says:

its exactly like the brain cell/universe thing, but COOLER!

  23. hi says:

The Lord of the Rings movies are the greatest movies ever.

  24. Roojole says:

Thats true ! But that planet is called Fomalhaut B

  25. BBB says:

Maybe the owner of your company should have invented you a sense of humor or the ability to pick up on a Simpson’s reference when quoted verbatim.

The most ironic thing about all of this is that I am, in fact, and engineer. Lighten up.
