The picture of Obama is a given.
The resemblance is remarkable.
Except Yezhov was a violent Communist flunky doing all the dirty work for Stalin — a real psychopath. He ran the Terror of the late 1930s. Then, wanting to cover his tracks, which he did freqently, Stalin had him shot and he was replaced with Beria.
Obama doesn’t fit Yezhov’s syle. He’s more like Stalin, personality-wise. Phsychologically speaking, none of the three should ever have been let near large amounts of power. Lenin warned about Stalin before he ded, Stalin buried the letter. Yezhov used what power he had (and as head of the KGB he had quite a bit) but he was definitely subordinated and fearful of Stalin Obama, like Stalin, thinks that he can do no wrong, regardless of the cost. In Stalin’s case it was measured in terms of deaths. In Obama’s terms it is is the decline of the US economy. The end does not justify the means.

I don’t think UN has a listings of quality of life. They do however have the Human Development Index and the numbers in the comment correspond pretty well to the rankings (not the index), my guess is that it is old rankings.
There are a lot of differents indices that measure quality of life, but the rankings usually turn out rather similar: with “scary socialistic” (actually democratic countries with a lot of elected Social Democratic politicians, but who would expect USAians to understand the difference) countries on top.

You limit contact with the outside world and essentially brainwash your country into believing not only socialism (which is the ideology behind communism)) that not socialism a great idea for your own country, it’s what the entire world needs. So you spread it. Doesn’t matter how (invasion, destabilization, assassination, etc.) Any way you slice it socialism IS BAD it didn’t work in the USSR, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Zimbabwe…. and so on. Democracy, the free market, individual rights, freedom of choice, freedom of speech, right to bear arms, freedom of press, and any other freedom we enjoy can’t exist under socialism.

Have you seen the news since the 2006 midterm elections? Our entire anti-terror policy has changed. Before 2006 our military in Afghanistan was given a quota of prisoners to bring in for interrogation. Anyone who was suspicious (ex: two Chinese Muslims roaming the afghan border at night) were brought in for questioning. Since public and international outcry nobody gets brought in or sent to Guantanamo without probable cause. Probable cause gets you arrested in the US. Under the geneva convention you get fair treatment. Al Qaeda doesn’t play by those rules. (cutting a soldiers head off with a saber is against the rules) Sleep deprivation isn’t that bad in comparison. Water boarding is some pretty bad stuff but on a global scale that’s not very harsh. In Saudi Arabia people get their hand cut off for stealing. For planting a roadside bomb and killing scores of civilians all we do is wear you out and induce simulated drowning. Who’s the real monster there?

Actually… If you do a google image search, you’ll find that this specific picture is on at least three different sites… Wikimedia.org, some [spanish?] biography site, and it’s also the main photo for him at (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolai_Jeschow) and (http://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolajus_Je%C5%BEovas). If you switch to the English version, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolai_Yezhov), it shows another picture, but it’s definitely the same page. A lot of the other languages use the same photo.

I don’t see it. BO’s eyes are narrower, ears larger, nose broader, face longer and more angular than whatshisname’s. There’s a faint similarity in the laugh lines/mouth area, but even that’s a bit of a stretch given the poor quality of the older pic. Not a very good TLL.
Besides some resemblance in the nose, ears, eyes, mouth, laugh lines, and dimples these two look nothing alike and you’re a racist. :p

What the hell is wrong with you… really? Tiny, tiny penis I bet. Really, why else all the anger toward everyone? Obama has the most votes of any candidate besides Reagan. There are excellent gay and female politicians, it’s just damn hard to get them elected nationally because of the red states. Nothing against people in red states in general, but it’s empirically true and a loss to those states that they only try to pick the best white, male, straight, Christian instead of tbe best person for the job because the small minded make up enough of the population to make it so. We’ve had a few disabled presidents and they’ve done just fine and sometimes great. And, we have a white, straight, physically able male in office right now that has the lowest approval rating in history. So yes, political tolerance rules because most of the country picks the best candidate from the entire pool of candidates instead of settling for inferior candidates with the “right” characteristics.

Um, if you read my post, you’d see that I said the problem was limiting your search to that group not anything about excluding people who have those characteristics. Excluding 20% of the population (give or take) that is white, male straight and Christian) is just as dumb as excluding a large majority of people because they are not. And, yes, if you decided to exclude people who were had those characteristics it would be discrimination. Learn to read. And, the answer isn’t always your discriminating too! Discriminating against people who have the right to discriminate! I am not forcing people to vote in their best interest in anay way. I just think it’s sad that people choose from a limited pool of candidates which may or may not contain the best candidate instead of expanding their search to include the vast majority of people.
You want to talk of small pools of choice? When was the last time you voted for someone who wasn’t rich and out of touch with the majority of people?

Those are unfortunate as well. And, the last time I did was when I voted for my local officials, because I vote for all elections not just the big ones. I am not destroying imagination. In fact, I encourage it in schools especially. The current school system tries to squash creativity with inappropriate testing and poor funding, but that’s a completely new argument. The “progressives” tend to favor the arts and music to a much greater degree than conservatives. But, ignorancer and hatred is far from imaginative. Put someone you disagree with next to someone who is truly evil? That’s not creative at all. But, I will agree you have to be very imaginative to come up with a way that these are actually similar in ways that make sense. You really have to squint, shake you head and be totally motivated to slander to see this one.
One problem, this is Totally Looks Like, not Totally Acts Like. No one is saying Obama resembles Yezhov in any other way than they bear a passing physical resemblance. Before you start accusing people of things, look around at what’s actually going on.

This is actually one of my pet peeves. Why do people use the legal definitions of things to try to make someone else look stupid for using the every day use. It’s like getting pissed for saying someone murdered someone when it was technically manslaughter. There are numbers. Even if those features are completely overlapping, there is a large chuck who would not vote for black, women, gays and non-christians.
And, these are when you say that it’s their own party, which largely determines votes usually.

Actually. in English you can put it the “Y” — in Russian, there is no “Y” and so “E” os pronounced “YEH.” Therefore, Ezhov can be considered correct to some extent. However it would be more correct if the “E” were used with the Russian/Cyrillic letter we characterize “ZH” with — and is impossible for me to enter here. And the English “V” at the end is written as a “B” in the Cyrillic alphabet. Anyway, it’s nit-picking relative to the subject matter.
However, if you stand the two together, you may notice a huge difference. Nikolai Yezhov was only about five feet tall. Midget.

Ezhov was the head of the Soviet NKVD (what we later knew as the KGB) during Stalin’s Great Purge (or, as they call it in Russia, “The Terror”) from 1936 to 1938.
You can see below that the above picture of Ezhov was not made up. Actually, the picture is interesting — Stalin is posed like Napoleon and Ezhov like Hitler.
Considering that Stalin was not very tall (5’6”), you can guess how tall Ezhov was. Any way, under Stalin’s command, Ezhov was responsible for over 680,000 executions and many more deaths of people he sent to the Gulag. He set quotas for each region (oblast) for the number of daily executions. It didn’t matter if the condemned guy had done anything. He’d get a call to report to the People’s Commissariat of Justice (or whatever they called it) and told to sit outside of an office and wait. After a while, somebody would come out of the office and say, “Citizen, you have just been condemned to death …” Two soldiers would appear; take the guy out to the courtyard; and BANG! No indictment, no defense, no appeal — and the guy would never know why he was being killed — it was the quota.
He was responsible for the deaths of 27,000 Russian military officers — which didn’t help Russia when WWII started.
Ezhov fell out of favor with Stalin — probably because Stalin never kept any of his people around who knew where the bodies were buried — and was executed just before the war. KGB head Beria was the luckiest — he made it until Stalin died; then Khrushchev knocked him off.

Now, how have above posters implied that Obama is off limits? By defending his policies? By questioning the intent of the poster? Firstly, how is attacking his policies and lauding the post any more legitimate. Put differently, why does the blame for misuse of this board – which, to my knowledge, has no proscribed terms of use – fall upon the liberals engaged in the argument, and not the conservatives? Secondly, why does coming to the defense of the figure under attack mean that that person is off limits, rather than simply meaning that the defender disagrees with the attacks?
