The old movies had a ton of stuff made like that. It’s called making your budget go far. Lightsabers? Camera flashbulbs with stiff added. That’s the most famous one, but there are a ton of improv props in the films.

There truly is nothing new under the sun. In this case, as has been stated above more than a few times, the com thingy was actually made out of the razor it looks like. I remember reading about it in a book shortly after The Phantom Menace came out. That and how they had to spend a ton of money to increase the height of all the sets (’cause they only built them to the height of the tallest actor) when Liam Neeson was cast as Qui-Gon (/geekout).

FYI – the lightsabers used in the original movies were simply bedazzled flashbulb handles (you know, the kind now seen in old-fashioned movies – the guy is holding the flash up in one hand while the camera is in the other) – my grandfather was trying to sell the whole bulb/handle/cord set on ebay, and it turns out the handle on it’s own sells for more than the whole set.

that’s part of what i liked about the old movies – guessing what ‘normal’ things they turned into fancy, futuristic gizmos; this particular razor/comlink was probably a throwback to the original prop designs. OR, maybe it’s just a coincidence that the comlink looks like the razor. how many different ways can one design a telephone anyway? talk about depleting natural resources; we’re just about out of original ideas.

I remember sitting in the cinema watching Phantom Menace and thinking, “What’s Qui-Gon doing with my razor?” It made me wonder how many of the other bits and pieces in the movie were everyday objects spraypainted silver with stuff stuck on them.
