The Philosopher’s Stone is an old legend about Nicolas Flamel (that’s right, it’s old; he was real; Rowling didn’t make him up). He’s reputed to have made the legendary and heavily-sought-after-by-alchemists Philosopher’s Stone which would turn lead into gold and let you live forever.
Apparently, the publishers in America thought that the people in USA wouldn’t understand the reference to this old tale, and changed it to ‘sorcerer’ so people won’t be like, “HEY YOU’RE STUPID, THERE’S NOTHING PHILOSOPHICAL ABOUT THE STONE, IT’S A MAGIC STONE.”
