It is just interesting to see the same photo. It is like…hmmm…entertainment! Slightly more entertaining than all the controversy it caused on the blogs following, but not quite as entertaining as the comparitive pictures that aren’t the same exact picture….like Lindsey Lohan and Gollem…classic!

thats wher they got the picture. if u look at it the secondhand seranade looks just like the third angel cover just in black and white with a diferent name. i mean seriously they thought they could pull it off by just making those small changes but its unmistakeable i mean it even has the same chai,backround and even the lights are there

I am a book cover designer. Even rights managed images can be used on the same book cover, although technically, the second designer should be made aware of it if the vendor keeps accurate usage records. Their EULAs guarantee nothing, though. It happens.

There are entire blogs dedicated to spotting book covers that use the same images.

Also, when you’re dealing with larger publishing houses, they’re the ones who license the image, not the designer. Although, the designer will probably be the one tracking it down, but price isn’t the only issue. Big houses are willing to pay for the right image.

Quite often they have preferred vendors they license from (Getty or Corbis are most popular).

Smaller players use the micro-stock agencies such as Bigstockphoto.com and istockphoto.com (although big players will use them, too). You’ll see images from those places used over and over and over on books.

That image screams book cover. I would have grabbed it in a second.

no good artist will sell you a photo or art for under $50. my starting price as a “no name” as you so disrespectfully call us, was $200 while STILL an Illustration student at School Of Visual Arts.
if you are “doing” book covers as in illustrating them you are getting ripped off and getting paid less then the price to use Good stock Photos. if you mean “doing” as in getting artists, you are not getting anyone with true talent or solid training, because they would charge more otherwise.

This is yet another example of looks like being retarded and putting something on the main page that is obviously a recycling of the same image. Seriously, folks, if you can’t tell that that’s the same exact image only photoshopped to be black and white and the string of Christmas lights was photoshopped to be higher in reference to the sofa. It’s the SAME exact person on the couch. Same hair. Same wings. Same everything. Seriously folks, an image being reused is not a case of “looks like” because it’s the SAME effing thing. ugh.

PLEASE. As somebody who frequently does book covers, it is not that expensive. Yes, stock photos are cheaper – but you’re quoting Michael Whelan or somebody famous like that. You can get a solid photo or drawing from a no-name for next to nothing. Under $50 by a long shot.

same pic, second hand’s is only in black and white. looked up the dates and the album came out Feb 2008 and the book just now came out on march 3rd 2009.

Wow, people, chill. I actually recognize this picture–you can see it at GettyImages, which is a stock site, in the photography of Kamil Vojnar. Well, he was on GettyImages, anyway; maybe he isn’t now, I don’t know, but at any rate this was a stock photo. Which is kind of too bad, because it’s beautiful art in its own right.

There’s no plagiarism. Both publishers simply bought the same clipart image. Sometimes you can see the same photo on five or six different books, tweaked slightly.

This is immensely common in book publishing simply because of the cost of producing an original cover. A publisher can buy a royalty-free image for $10 and have their design department add titles and tweak for another $100. Compare that to $500 or more for a photo or $1,500 or more for a drawing.
