    lol @ tracing

  2. skeppy says:

As much as I despise Franz Ferdinand, this was an obvious culture reference/homage, not a “totally looks like.” If anything, it only proves how derivative and devoid of original creativity Franz Ferdinand is.

Humbug. Now get off my lawn.

    • bencott says:

uh, i believe the album cover was created before the poster.
      *ducks to avoid flying shoes*

    • Normal Person says:

Yes, when something is SUPPOSED to look like something else, it shouldn’t be here. Lame. It’s like criticizing the cover of “The Da Vinci Code” for looking like the Mona Lisa.

    • Ayingel says:

oh yeah you’re *so* right. they’re so devoid of creativity to use something that most people probably didn’t know about until they looked it up. i’d actually say good on them for doing something different.

    • Blue says:

Get off my lawn? No offense, but that gave me a giggle and made my day.

    • Dokosa says:

The album came out in 2006. The poster says 2009.

    • Tremble says:

The album art most definitely came out before the poster on the left. I’d say, if anything, it shows how devoid of creativity the Belgian Socialist Party is. In the top left, it clearly states “Mei 2009 l 14u00″ which means May 2009 l 14 o’clock (2:00 PM) whereas the album “You Could Have it so Much Better,” shown on the right, came out 4 years earlier in 2005.

Next time, don’t let personal music preference make you appear to be an ass hat.

      • adsm says:

But for all you know the picture from the Belgian Solcialist Party used to be a poster the party used before 2005 and is being reused as a design people can recognize.

    • Ty says:

      you fail..
OMG? anyone pay attention in history class. does… Archduke, Franz Ferdinand of Austria ring a bell to anyone? the guy who was assassinated at Bosnian?

see theres a reason for the bands name, and theres a reason why their poster is so similar…

(yes i know im posting this comment for the 2nd time.. cause its at the top and maybe ppl are more likely to read it lol)

      • Pitnicker says:

Actually, Franz Ferdinand was named after a racehorse named “The Archduke.” That racehorse was named for the historical Franz Ferdinand.

  3. ... says:

I wonder if this was done on purpose… HMMMM

  4. Anon says:

It’s a poster for a music event ofcourse the reference is obvious

    • ben says:

thank god everyone isn’t an idiot. Good job hugo

    • Mao says:

Took this post THAT LONG to figure it out?

Thank you, Hugo. You give me hope for internet-man kind

    • wheeeeedoggie says:

Thank god. I’m so glad I am not the only one who thinks this continued posting of things that are SUPPOSED TO look like something else as a totally looks like is lame.

I’m also pathetically grateful I’m not the only one who recognizes Rodchenko. Thanks, hugo.

  5. boogie says:

I hate belgians now!! They have to pay Franz Ferdinand few dollars!1

  6. Ayingel says:

you forgot the book-cover that’s in russian. and the book cover that’s in english.

  7. Fredje vis says:

It doesn’t look a like. It’s the same.

  8. Ronnie says:

Wow, another submission with images that look exactly the same. Get the hell over it…I mean, I wish they wouldn’t submit stuff like this either, but there’s not much you can do if it’s already on the page.

    • Cate says:

Aren’t you forgetting something? Sufficient people must have voted for it to appear on front page. They don’t all get here.

    • SleepyKitsune says:

I’m sorry, I mean I’m pretty sure your point is that one is purposefully derived from the other, but your wording…

“…another submission that looks exactly the same…”

I should hope on a site called “Totally Looks Like” that the submissions ARE of things that look the same (preferably accidentally).

  9. De* says:

It surely is the other way round, and it was surely made on purpose. Not funny.

  10. YouallsuckatTLL says:

did they merge this place with FAIL blog or something?

*sigh* what’s next? “Batman Symbol totally looks like bat”

  11. tikitheremin says:

This is an incredibly feeble look alike. It’s actually from yet another piece that was appropriated and used by both FF and the anarchist collective and as such is pretty pointless. IF the art had been transmogrified it in a way that was funny or inappropriate (case in point: Nazi brownshirt poster basically made into American cowboy/meat poster by hasty designer) I would be with you, but we live in a world of stock photos and clip art.

    • Sky Dizzle says:

Do you even know what transmogrify means? It has a grotesque connotation. Like if a beautiful women “transmogrified” into a giant hideous insect. Make sure you understand the meaning of obfuscatious words before vomitting your opinion onto the forums.

  12. Zipper says:

Welcome to another demonstration of “Stock Photography”

As you can see, anyone can purchase royalty free images, and fling them everywhere!

  13. Momoi says:

I believe Rodchenko did it first. And therefore even if the Socialists did use it, it wouldn’t be considered stealing because we’re all comrades.

  14. Silvahra says:

The cover of Franz Ferdinand album is supposed to be a copy of that poster. I think some of you just need to look up who Franz Ferdinand was or atleast finish High School.

    • Mao says:

I think maybe you should check that poster again. 2009?

Pretty sure the original looked a bit different.

Maybe you should “atleast” look up what you’re talking about.

  15. Mae says:

Perhaps the idea, but the actual image (homage image!) is the same with the poster and the cd cover and different from that original.

Perhaps you should have just outright ripped off the original.

  16. YouallsuckatTLL says:

ZOMG, lower case D totally looks like backwards lower case B

    d b

    SEE! =D

  17. KateMonster says:

Just like armskaap and hugo and Momoi said, BOTH the Franz Ferdinand cover and the Belgian poster are based on the Rodchenko poster (although why they both use the same stock photo girl I have no idea…)

  18. spatula says:

The girl in the photograph is, apparently, the former girlfriend of the guy who first managed and promoted Franz Ferdinand years and years ago. But don’t take my word for it!

  19. Kris says:

The album cover existed first, but it was a nod to Aleksandr Rodchenko’s poster design from 1924. Franz Ferdinand’s album art was designed by Matthew Cooper, and the poster above used his design (whether or not it was with his permission, I guess we’ll never know).

  20. Blue says:

These two R similiar, too similiar, besides what the chic is “saying” it’s the EXACT same picture.

  21. Ant says:

    OMGWTF?!!1!1one

Something BASED ON something else Totally Looks Like it! OMG!!

  22. Matildaluvstwilight says:

i think its meant 2 look like it

  23. karel says:

    CAPTION FAIL!

this event was held by the anarchistic kollective of ghent. No political party at all. And these are the guys that hate the belgian socialist party for losing their ideals to populism falling back to being just another belgian centre party

  24. karel says:

Lol, those weirdo’s make it to TLL. There’s like TEN members in that party (no kidding. ten).

  25. myow says:

yeah, the poster is copied from the album cover… and good grief, you ppl love seeing yourself type.

  26. Caligari says:

Google ‘Rodchenko’ and all will be revealed…

  27. Momoi says:

May Day is the International Day of the Worker, so its not an Anarchist holiday, but definately celebrated most by the Left Wing Communities, which includes Socialists and Communists too.

  28. ICDK says:

Oh, it’s one of *those* “looks like”. Sigh. Why do people still not get it?

  29. The girl used is probably from a stock art to be used by anyone. And, the girl gives the idea of shouting, so it’s perfect for those words to be like that. Therefore, making the album art and the poster, well, look a like.

    • i84u2bhappy says:

That is the only post that makes sense.

And here I was thinking the site was called totallylooksdifferent.com

  30. Lollookatmyavatar says:

They look the same because they ARE the same

    • yo says:

Franz Ferdinantstole thisposter himself from a Russian communist propaganda poster.
Plus: this is not a poster from a Belgian socialist party. It’s a call out for an anti-capitalist 1st of may demo by anarchists, autonomous and other rebelious types.

  31. opi says:

their both a rip of a photography by rodchenko

  32. WCK says:

They probably look alike BECAUSE THEY ARE THE SAME PICTURE. Failure.

  33. Sandy says:

hmm… where do you think that band got their cover from??

  34. Dragony says:

Hmm..Makes ya wonder if they’re related

  35. bob Wraith says:

    YOUR AN IDIOT

THEY MADE IT THE SAME ON PURPOSE

  36. ih8sns says:

No your all wrong Franz Ferdinand created socialism.
and the poster is an homage to the album.
    Marx is a total fan.

  37. Lassy says:

Don’t hate Belgium, we have the best beer, waffles and fries in the world ^^ you are allowed to hate Ghent though.. Antwerp is much better :P And I love Holland, but we never “stole” your language.. But if you want it “back” okay then! Well, I guess it’s true what they say: People from Belgium are dumb and people from Holland are cheap :P

    • karel says:

      gij ongeloofelijke Antwerpse calle.

Enjoy

  38. NaughtyMoose says:

The truth is neither one of them is original… duh?

  39. becca says:

clearly intentional and not a look alike

  40. Anon says:

its supposed to look like it..thats the joke. fail

  41. alter says:

    This is definitely on purpose.

  42. Vivi says:

People, it’s called stock photography. It is in fact the same photo. People buy the copyright to use it for whatever, it’s not taken for a specific purpose.

  43. AE says:

Blimey, People – does no-one here know anything about design?!?

The Album cover was *famously* based on Alexander Rodchenko’s 1924 portrait of Lilya Brik (try a search on google images for a picture). He was one of the founders of the constructivism – an art movement whose style that both the designs here allude to.

The 1924 original is a design classic so the homage, in both cases, was intentional and to the original work by Rodchenko.

  44. Jeezus says:

you guys are retarded…they chose that album cover for a reason…franz ferdinand usually uses their covers as a form of sociological expression

  45. sondra says:

Well, duh; that was the point of the album cover…

  46. CM says:

Franz ferdinand’s album cover was meant as an homage to Rodchenko’s posters. If you look at a lot of their videos you can see that they’re into a lot of Russian-Avant-Garde stuff.

  47. Kimmie says:

And it’s so obvious that those who think socialism is the worst thing that could ever happen to a country are Americans.

Oh, and before you go ape, I’m an American.

  48. fet says:

I think Franz Ferdinand based a lot on the work of a Russian designer named http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Rodchenko

  49. Hannah says:

idiots. Franz Ferdinand was a REAL PERSON during WWII and he WAS communist. the band is named after him and they probably made this poster in full awareness of the look-a-like.

  50. billyr says:

Idiot… they just took the propoganda and copied it

  51. devin says:

actually this poster has been a socialist post for years in Europe.

Cuba is not Socialist as defined by Marx. It is Leninist and is authoritarian because of Lenin’s misinterpretation of Marx’s and Engels’ words “dictatorship of the Proletariat”, which means the Working class (who happens to be the majority) get democratic control over the socio-economy, in stead of being in the hands of the bourgeois (which are those who own the means of production, about 1% of the US).

I dont see why socialism would ruin our “creativity”, Ive been to Cuba and the people there are very artistic, they have one of the best Jazz scenes in the world i think. Also you should see how skilled and innovative the people are. The keep cars from the 50s running like they are brand new and I’ve never met such a hard working Agricultural population, of coarse they have to be because of all the trade embargo’s against them.

I really dont think anyone on this site understands what Socialism or Capitalism is as defined by Marx and Adam Smith. I strongly suggest you learn about both.

  52. DJ says:

Really, it the same, words changed, freakin original!

  53. stefanos says:

Its actualy a famous pop art piece by an artist called rodchenko. do some research.

    • T Roldao says:

“Its actualy a famous pop art piece by an artist called rodchenko. do some research.”

Constructivist, not pop art. Do some research.

  54. duh i think thats the point you idiot

    no offence :)

  55. Axel says:

    Yet another fail

  56. Victoria Marie;) says:

Yes they The Franz Ferdinand was made before the poster. This is the “You Could Have It So Much Better” Album it came out in 2005:) I have every album of theirs:)

  57. emeyle says:

    Ummm…. Franz was first hun.

  58. Ty says:

OMG? anyone pay attention in history class. does… Archduke, Franz Ferdinand of Austria ring a bell to anyone? the guy who was assassinated at Bosnian?

see theres a reason for the bands name, and theres a reason why their poster is so similar…

  59. Sara says:

That girl is a friend from the band Franz Ferdinand.

  60. Jeb says:

Hate to be the one that breaks up this party, but both the poster and the album cover are based on a 1924 poster of Lilya Brik, the Russian avant-guarde artist and poet. So really, the capitalists (Franz Ferdinand) were appropriating socialist imagery, not the other way round :-p

  61. A finn says:

The whole point of the album cover is to look like this belgian socialist party poster…

  62. Hana says:

…its just a reference to that poster, it was the POINT of the album cover looking the SAME!…Any idiot can tell you that.

  63. Orion Morris says:

Eugene V. Debs…. Why doesnt everybody here just read his wikiquote

Considering he was probably one of the most legit Americans to ever run for president.

“Where there is a lower class, I am in it. While there is a criminal element, I am of it. And while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.”

  64. kat says:

    ???
Whats next, this girl totally looks like her twin sister!!!! OMG!!!!!

oh. And remember people, sarcasm is the answer to everything.

  65. Lily says:

ITs because Franz Ferdinand was the arch duke whose assination practically started the first world war. Any many associate the star of socialism with germans during world war one. (Propaganda said they were “reds” or communists/socialsts)

  66. Anonymous says:

Russian constructivist artist Alexander Rodchenko, whose style still impacts on modern graphic design, made this propaganda poster depicting the shouting woman in 1924: http://pics.livejournal.com/miclick/pic/00035cfc/s640x480
Clearely, Franz Ferdinand were quoting such artwork.
The woman is shouting: “КНИГИ”, which means “books”. That is what most people here should read more.
