I smell a trol here, but I’m feeling benevolent and will feed it.

1. Tor (or Thor for you anglosaxon types) is the god of thunder.

2. There are not nor have ever existed any “viking gods”. In English I believe the common term is “Norse gods”. Not all people living in the north were vikings. Vikings were the ones who went out “i viking” as it were, roughly translated to “on a tour of trading, pirating and exploration”.

The painting of Odin was painted by George von Rosen roughly ten years before Whitman’s death.
…it’s highly possible that the painter met Whitman and decided to paint Odin’s visage as a likeness to the poet’s as a sort of omage to Whitman’s unique poetry. It is to be noted that Odin, in Norse mythology, was not only a god of battle and death, but of wisdom, poetry, and prophecy as well. This, or course, could surely have inspired the painter to use Whitman’s worn, knowing countenance as the battle hardened, yet wise and philosophical face of Odin.

Loke is most defenetly not a god whatsoever, as he is a giant. And if you would look more deeply into for instance the Edda you would see that Oden is infact often at least as untrustworthy and prone to deception as ever Loke.

you said it yourself…squinty and empty…Odin’s not known for wearing an eyepatch like a Bond villain. Most depictions show him with one eye closed over the empty socket.

That actually is one of his signature trademarks. Whenever he travels Midgård disguised as an ordinary man he dons the hat. If you read anything on the subject it’s kinda on the level of Buddha being enlighted or the Chupacabra sucking goats and whatnot.
