Because the continuity errors in Harry Potter don’t lower the level of quality? What about characters that don’t really act in character? Or the completely lame ending? I’m not terribly impressed with The Lord of the Rings (The Hobbit was his real masterpiece.) either, but Tolkien at least knew how to write a series of books that makes sense.

Being 30 its hard to seriously consider the Dune v Tremors debate. Dune is a masterpiece, I dont particularly like the film, but its an epic. Tremors was fun, like a kazoo. But like that kazoo how many times do you use it? Its a novelty, use it once throw it away. Id watch Dune with someone who has never seen it, id watch Tremors (if i watch it ever again) with some buddies behind a few beers. I think its says enough that the worms were part of Dune, worms were 100% of Tremors. Plus I hate movies where at least 50% of the characters have to be idiots so it gets narrowed down to hero boy and hot girl. Seriously Dune v Tremors????

I’d have to disagree with your “Harry Potter is to The Lord of the Rings”, or rather, not the comparison itself but the reasons behind your comparison. If you mean both Tremors and HP are quicker and more eventfull but Dune and LoTR are slower and deeper, then I’d agree with you wholeheartedly. But you saying that LoTR is BETTER than HP? No no no, they’re DIFFERENT not better. Take it from a guy who’s read so many fantasy series he can’t even remember what they’re all called anymore. They’re aimed at different audiences and completely different styles of fantasy. The overall quality however, is roughly the same.

I’ve been reading adult fiction for over 5 years now (I’m only 18 so that’s longer than it sounds), and while the first dune novel truely was brilliant, the second one was complex to the point where it just became more work to understand it than it was worth in my opinion. Also, I prefer fantasy to science fiction so I suppose I can only take so much technical-sci-fi talk before I get overloaded. I’ll stick to Robert Jordan for the time being just a deep but doesn’t make my head hurt XD

Well, the plot in the first Dune novel isn’t THAT hard to follow, and I found it quite entertaining. But the second one XD I couldn’t get 5 chapters into the dang thing.

But of course if you’re an action/thriller movie goer instead of a book reader, then you’d fall asleep for almost any book over 400 pages

Actually they are the same. Baised on a folklore in the Gobi desert. A great sand worm that is blind, only to find it’s pray by sound after being awakened from a thousand year sleep. Only human feet can awaken the worm, which is why people cross on camels.

During the scene in which the main ghost couple attempts to leave their home after death, they are transported to Mars, and encounter Sand Worms, which send them rushing back into their home. Also, later, Beetlejuice encounters the worms, unhappily for him, during the wedding scenes.

However, they were black and gray striped. See the cartoon version of Beetlejuice for more about Mars and the sand worms.

And Betelgeuse may be what his name actually was, (after the star) but the movie is actually called ‘Beetlejuice’.

Both Dune movies weren’t that exceptional, even though I love David Lynch movies. But I can wholeheartedly recommend the whole Dune book series by Frank Herbert, five tomes I think. Some of the best books I’ve ever read. A whole universe full of complex interconnections and intricate power games will open up for you, enriched by pearls of psychological and philosophical insight. If you go ‘yawn, what is this about?’ while reading, put them down and try again a few years laters. Seriously.

My kids, when I tell them that an old movie was really good, ask me if that was with or without a six-pack of beer. This was because I told them Death Race 2000 was an awesome movie, so we rented it and watched it together (yes, my kids are old enough). It was so, so bad. I said it must have been the six-pack of beer that made me remember it as really good, so now the kids want to know how much beer we had drunk when we had watched a movie.
