Actually, the English translation of his Japanese name(which is eggman, or something close to it) is Robotnik,and then, for some reason, they started to call him Dr. Eggman. Also, Sonic Heroes, while somewhat fun, cannot hold a candle to the Genesis games.

If he’s Dr. Robotnik (orig), that would make his last name Robotnik. His first name could be Eggman, although that sounds quite silly. It’s possible tho.

and I kept seeing the SAME darn thing! So it wasn’t just me…!

As for the whole Robotnik/Eggman feud; just stop it, okay? Dr. Robotnik = Dr. Eggman. I believe it’s just localization. A translation that occurred from JP to NA release. If you have eyeballs in your skull, you can clearly see in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, if you go to the top levels of Sky Fortress and look at the “rudders” there, it’ll clearly say “EGGMAN” on the sides, despite our beloved round villain being named Dr. Robotnik in the game manual (EN). Call them whatever you like, they’re the same character regardless- that, of course, can be argued further, when it comes to the good Doc’s transcendence from the games to the NA cartoon series.

they’re talking about the early games (Sega Genesis era) and the AMERICAN-MADE Sonic TV shows (SatAM Sonic and Adventures). since the early games had no voice acting in them and those two TV shows were made with an English language dub, well, your comment about “dumb dubs” is pointless.
