I like to use the word ‘misanthropy’ meaning a general dislike of all humanity, not one person over another or some quality/ trait thereof. I don’t dislike said person because of their heritage or where they grew up, or what they chose to believe in. But then again, why not get offended over stupid opinions? Now that’s purposeful.

Can I just clear this up because I HATE it when people say “I could care less”. That means you care. If not, say “I COULDN’T care less.” ie, I am at a point in my life where I could not possibly care any less about that, because I am at the peak of apathy. Not, “Well, I care about some things more, but I still care about this over other things.”

It doesn’t make any sense.

i think black people in america are being racist againt themselves and the whites are picking up on it..i know that is because of the rather colourful history of course..but still..if they could jsut try to work in the “we are all people” direction it would be nice..by that i dont mean whites kissing black peoples ass and be on alert 24/7 to not say anything that COULD be considered racist, but also blacks not trying to be ‘black’ so much..with many people i almost get the impression they are cought up in the image of a black person and everything they do, that is considered white would get them criticized as acting ‘white’..

one thing i dont get…people that are obviously mixed, may it be 4/5 white and 1/5 black, still consider themselves black..whyyyyy? yeah, they may not look like the average WASP whatever, but they dont look like a 100% black person either…
dont get it…….

well, you guys need to relax and be given more time i guess…….
complicated stuff..

but yes..does anybody that is not in the model business or lives in germany even know who bruce darnell is?

Saying blacks are good singers is *not* racism. Not even close.

Racism is the belief of inherent inferiority based on the color of one’s skin.

You could even say you hate black people without being a racist. A bigot, sure, but not necessarily a racist.

I don’t know either of these men, so I looked up other photos… yeah, they sorta look alike. It’s not a TLL, though. Bruce normally looks like a fruitcake.

Two things wrong here:

1) I think you have some non-blacks trying to come off as the “Non-black person who will fight for black rights, and I want everyone to know it.” There’s no need to say “I’m white, and I know black people, so I’m qualified to say they don’t look alike and you’re a racist prick for suggesting so.” Either they look alike or they don’t, then you continue to spew out random puns that always go on on these comments.

2) I doubt half of you know what racism is. It is true: white people are rarely the subject of racism. This is because of white privilege. You never have to walk in a store and worry about employees staring at you a little too hard. Your neighbors will almost always be nice to you. (If they aren’t, it won’t be because of your race). There are plenty benefits to white privilege. I say, enjoy it.

Last, I read this “Tell that to my white Irish ancestors, who were slaves to Vikings and eventually Britons and even Southern plantation owners!” You’re right. Your people were oppressed. BY OTHER WHITES. Or, if it makes you feel better, Europeans against Europeans. Lastly, your ancestors were not slaves to Southern whites; they were indentured servants. Good day, everyone!

I am of northern European decent and had a ton of Asian friends at work and in college, to the point that I could begin to discern a persons ancestry by looking at them: Chinese/Japanese/Cambodian etc… So imagine my surprise when I was sitting with a friend from India and when I tried to describe someone, she sheepishly told me we all looked alike to her. I think 3 things are true 1) it is always easier to distinguish difference in faces you are around a lot, usually your same heritage, 2) some people are simply more tuned into these things than others and 3) This does not have to be a racial thing, it can be gender too. If there are only a few women in the office, watch how much more often they are called by the wrong name for example. A friend I was frequently confused with had completely blond (I am a very dark brunette) and 3 inches taller than me, but I got called by her name consistently.

I come from a pretty suburban-white area but I grew up next door to a black family and there have always been black people around or on TV, so I guess I’m pretty used to them. I live in an area that is very multicultural (Montreal), so people don’t really say stuff like “black people all look alike”.

Although sometimes they do say that about Asians. Which I also disagree with because there are all kinds of Asian faces. And hell, I very often see white people who look exactly like some other person I know and have a hard time figuring out if I know the person or not.

It’s more about how the brain works out the face-recognition.
If someone is not connected to you, your brain doesn’t process their faces completely. It just recognizes the most prominent facts.

Yes, but are you around a lot of black students? I’m with you on the “scientific” thing being bs, but I do think it’s harder for people of race A to tell people of race B apart if they’re never around people of race B.

Example: I’m white, and I come from a predominately white area. Before going to college, I had a hard time distinguishing one black person from another if they were the same gender, roughly the same size, and had the same hair style (provided I didn’t know them well, of course). Now that I’ve been around people of different races a lot, I have no trouble with it.

So I’ll agree that graspee is full of it, but I’d like to add in a clause about how often a person is exposed to other races.

Yes, I can. I have no trouble telling apart the faces of my black students, even at first glance. Even within the first day of meeting them I could recognize them in the halls, even among dozens of other black students. I would like to see where you get your “scientific facts”. (Oh right; you probably don’t have any, ’cause you’re probably trolling.)

Point being: some people just look alike, some don’t! Comes from the fact that most of us have eyes, a nose, a mouth, and ears.

A) Black people DON’T call themselves “african american” in normal conversation just like white people don’t.

C) My grandparents came from Ireland and Italy and I have never once in my entire life referred to myself as Irish-American or Italian-American, I was born here, I’M AN AMERICAN
D)the people in South Africa are just like the black people here and pretty much everywhere else. How about you go look up the percentage of people in our prisons who are “african american”?

Ooh yes. My friends refer to me constantly as being ‘white’ without any qualm of feeling racist, where they would be deeply anguished if I were to even jokingly refer to them as ‘asian’ (“We’re not just Asian! We’re Chinese/Filipino/Korean etc.)
