Actually, Seuss did make a Nixon version for a friend but that was a private joke and a parody of the original, which had nothing to do with Nixon, originally.

Since Joseph Mathieu re-illustrated this after Seuss’ death, it has nothing to do with Seuss’ tendency to put political references in his book.

Oh, I see. It’s an illustration by Joseph Mathieu. The Tooth Book is written by Seuss under his other pseudonym, Theo LeSeig.

I don’t believe that’s a picture from The Tooth Book. It doesn’t look like a Seuss illustration at all.

Dr. Seuss was known for putting many political and social references in his books. I have a feeling that the character in the book was supposed to reference Roosevelt. Just as the book Marvin Gay Moonie won’t you Please go Home was a reference to the impeachment of Richard Nixion.
